Jaw pain can cause headaches, migraines, neck pain, ear-ache, difficulty chewing and sometimes even the ability to talk.
At Derrick Physio, we offer TMJ specialist treatment which can help relieve these symptoms of jaw pain and determine the cause of your symptoms.
The jaw is made up of two joints which are located in front of the ear canal. It is a complex joint made up of ligaments, muscles, two condyles with fibrocartilage at the end and a movable disc with surrounding capsules.
To treat jaw pain with physiotherapy we use a combination of passive manual movements, soft tissue massage, exercise, and trigger point therapy to improve range of movement, reduce pain and loosen tight musculature.
Neck rehabilitation is also important as the muscles and nerves in this area link to the head and jaw. We assess neck and spinal posture, which may be affecting the jaw's ability to function well,
We advise on lifestyle factors including sleep health, bruxism (clenching), stress and anxiety as well as pain management.
We do recommend seeing your dentist first, to rule out any dental issues. If you are still experiencing TMJ/jaw pain, physiotherapy treatment can often relieve symptoms and determine the cause of your pain.
